How to do background scanning on a Mac with the ScanSnap iX500

Although active windows are great to show the scanning progress sometimes they can get in the way of your work flow. There is a quick and easy way to deactivate the pop-ups on your Mac just by changing a couple of settings.

Start by clicking on the ScanSnap icon on your dock to activate the ScanSnap Manager.

You will find the ScanSnap Manager at the top of your screen next to the Apple Menu. Click on ‘ScanSnap Manager’ for the drop down menu and select ‘Preferences’. See the image below for visual steps:

After selecting ‘Preferences’, a pop-up window will come up showing ‘Status Display’ as one of the tabs. Select ‘Status Display’ as seen in the image below.

Under the ‘Status Display’ tab, unselect the box that says ‘Show the scan progress status (recommended)’. Once it is unselected, exit out of the window.

Next, open ‘ScanSnap Manager Settings’ (shortcut is command S). In the settings window, disable the Quick Menu by unselecting the ‘Use Quick Menu’ box on upper left corner shown in the image below.

Under the ‘Application’ tab, you will see a drop down menu where you will be able to select a new application to scan into. Select the ‘None (Scan to File)’ option.

Under the ‘Save’ tab select the destination you would like your documents to be saved by clicking the ‘Browse’ button.

When you have selected a location for your documents to be saved, click the ‘Apply’ button in the bottom right corner. This will save the changes you have made and close the window.

Next time, you will be able to scan without seeing any pop-ups and your documents will appear in the location you have chosen.
